SUMMARY:Research Webinar: Regionalizing MS4 Compliance: Opportunities and Challenges for Vermont Communities
DESCRIPTION:Please join LCSG for our first fall research webinar of 2025 where Andrew Brown\, Stormwater Regional Utility Research Fellow at LCSG\, will present his research. \nThrough a year-long fellowship supported by six Vermont municipalities and the Lake Champlain Sea Grant\, the Stormwater Regional Utility Research Fellowship examined whether regional collaboration among Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) communities could improve efficiency and reduce costs. The MS4 program requires municipalities to take action to reduce pollution from stormwater runoff—rain and snowmelt that flow across roads\, parking lots\, and other hard surfaces\, picking up oil\, fertilizers\, salt\, and debris before entering rivers and lakes. Meeting these requirements is essential for protecting local waterways\, but it can also be complex and costly for individual towns to manage on their own. \nOver the course of the fellowship\, Brown examined the full range of MS4 compliance activities\, collected and analyzed cost data\, reviewed governance options\, and gathered input from municipal staff and partners. The work provides insights into how towns can collaborate to meet stormwater obligations more effectively. By looking at both financial and organizational opportunities\, the fellowship points toward practical strategies for protecting our shared natural resources in ways that are sustainable and cost-effective. \nRegister in advance for this webinar. \nThis webinar is part of the LCSG Research Webinar Series. Learn about the other webinars and register for them all.
